IOTA supported charging station gets launched in the Netherlands

ElaadNL, a company focused on building innovative and smart charging infrastructure, launched a charging station in Netherlands that accepts payments in IOTA on April 18, 2018. The charger will operate from ElaadNL test site in Arnhems Buiten Energy Business Park.

Apart from the IOTA charger ElaadNL test site already contains a fast charger, a battery charger, charging island and two charging lanterns.

Head of Mobility at the IOTA Foundation, Alisa Maas, said:

“IOTA is thrilled to see ElaadNL take their IOTA smart charging station development to the next level. This solution demystifies IOTA’s potential to become the backbone of the Machine Economy. Thanks to ElaadNL’s cutting-edge innovation, seamless e-mobility is taking one big leap forward, and we look forward to sharing this achievement with the rest of our growing ecosystem, at the crossroads of mobility, energy, and smart cities sectors.”

The charging station is not supervised and works independently that uses IOTA’s “blockless” distributed ledger technology, Tangle, to receive payments and charge vehicles. The station works as a Machine-to-machine (M2M) based platform.

ElaadNl’s charging station is capable of setting up TCP/IP connection with the car with the help of a custom hardware operation. It uses the machine-to-machine mode to transfer required data and payment through IOTA once the connection is established. Even if the vehicle lacks the essential hardware and software, a user can use his/her IOTA wallet to charge the car through IOTA tokens.

Managing Director of ElaadNL, Onoph Caron, said, “This charger shows the ability to use the real machine to machine communications and micropayments, with the use of IOTA as a secure layer for these payments and data. ElaadNL researches all kinds of innovative and smart technologies with regard to charging electric cars. DLT-technology might become a popular thing shortly. Now we can explore and research its possibilities on our testing ground in Arnhem.”

Tangle by IOTA is a step ahead of the Distributed Ledger Technology which assists the Internet of Things (IoT). It uses an open-source platform to boost easy M2M interactions. The technology assures secure data transfer and enables fee-less real-time micropayments.

In order to function smoothly, the charging station does not need an extra communication protocol. Unlike other charging stations that ElaadNL station does not require the usage of a charging card as transactions are exchanged straightaway in real time.

The station also does not demand human supervision and runs entirely autonomously. Meter values are recorded in Tangle blockless distributed ledger technology in every 15 minutes to ensure indisputable management.

In similar news, Taipei city joined hands with IOTA in early 2018 to magnify government’s effort to develop a smart city.  Tangle technology caters many smart city initiatives like weather monitoring system and smart ID cards.

The breakthrough technology can initiate a boom in our digitally connected future which is fully digitalized. The technology can also be used in the premier energy sector. As of now, ElaadNL will probably be aiming to open more energy stations to assist smart car revolution.
